Signs Of A Google Search Ranking Algorithm Update On August 29th

There are signs of a Google search ranking update touching down late August 28th through August 29th. There is both forum chatter within the SEO industry and the rank checking tools also. It is hard to say if this is a big update at this point, it started off pretty mellow but as I watch the chatter, it is growing at a nice pace. The tools themselves are heating up between August 29th and August 30th as well.

Here are some of the chatter from WebmasterWorld, some as early as late Wednesday, August 28th:

+15% traffic today (against same day last week). Something happened. It is just me ? France, Finance niche

I am seeing some big increases for USA keywords this morning. Most of these are ones that dropped quite a lot in the last two or three weeks.

Lots of keywords have dropped from No1 position for me. I get around 200k+ Pageviews daily but today so far, its very low and I’m hoping I cross 150k at least. I’m sensing a possible major algorithm update before the week runs out.

I’m seeing 5-10% drops week over week in the US in the past couple of days, including today. I also saw similar drops last week. I can’t really figure out what’s going on as my biggest volume keywords are pretty much ranked the same. What’s even more weird is that I can’t see any drops in Google Search Console for the same days – for example, for a period where there is a 10% drop in GA, there is a corresponding 1% drop in GSC. I don’t know which data to trust anymore.

I’m getting traffic to a lot of the pages which dropped massively in June. It’s not much, but it does feel like Google is testing something.

Big increase in traffic after a week or so of going down hill, The person who predicted a update between 29th and 30th August was right so far!

That last comment was about Bill Lambert who posts in the comments section here, he posted 10 days ago in this comment saying “There should be a big update dropping on the 29 or 30. Last weekends test rollout passed all tests. All that I can say is try to get your website visitors to spend as much time on your website as possible.” He isn’t always right in his predictions but some say he is a Google insider. 🙂

There is also a bit of chatter about this in the Black Hat World forums, but not too much at this point.

Also Vlad is always on top of this as well:

The tools are showing signs as well, here is what they show as of the time I wrote this blog post (which was last night, I am on vacation, so writing mostly late a night. Note, I updated the the screenshots as of 6:45am EDT.)

Google Algorithm Update, Penalizing Domain Leasing, Bing Integrates With Google & Much More

I did this video outside a hotel in St. Louis right by a highway, so I apologize for the quality – I also exported it lower resolution so I can upload it on my slow internet speed. Google seems to be doing a search ranking algorithm update, it started about 36 hours ago. Google also has started penalizing domain leasing sections of sites, as they warned. Google said penalties can follow you even without redirects. Bing Webmaster Tools now lets you import you Google Search Console verified sites with a click of a button. Bing Places also syncs with Google My Business. Google Search Console removed some API features. Google has confirmed the featured snippets that anchor and highlight on desktop chrome. Google is no going to support the noindex in robots.txt starting September 1st. Google’s Danny Sullivan reacted to DuckDuckGo’s allegations, finally. Google said two waves of indexing is becoming less vital over time. Google is testing a new ad label, more spelled out. Google Ads launched seasonality adjustments for smart bidding. Google My Business added new service options for some industries. Google Image search removed the exact size and larger than size tool. Google AdSense is trying to improve ad quality which might impact some of your revenue. I posted the 13th vlog with Joy Hawkins this week on local ranking factors. That was this past week in search at the Search Engine Roundtable.

Daily Search Forum Recap: August 26, 2019

Here is a recap of what happened in the search forums today, through the eyes of the Search Engine Roundtable and other search forums on the web.

Search Engine Roundtable Stories:

  • Vlog #13: Joy Hawkins On Local Ranking Factors, Google Maps & Local SEO
In episode #13 of the vlog series at the Search Engine Roundtable I interviewed Joy Hawkins (@JoyanneHawkins). Joy Hawkins been doing local SEO for over 13 years, all local…
  • Google Confirms Featured Snippets Anchors & Highlights Feature On Desktop
On Friday we reported that Google was testing an AMP feature on desktop without AMP. This feature will take a searcher from a click on a featured snippet to that web site, anchor that user down to the appropriate text and highlight that text.
  • Google: Web Site Traffic Is Not A Ranking Factor
Want some pure myth busting from Google? Well, here it is. Google’s official Google Webmaster Twitter account said “traffic to a website isn’t a ranking factor.” This is in response to an SEO asking if it is.
  • Moving To A New Domain To Escape A Google Penalty Might Not Work Says Google
This isn’t exactly new, news – I covered this in 2014, but with the news around Dejan getting hit badly by a manual action, his plan is to move to a new domain and not redirect the old domain to the new. But John Mueller from Google rained on his parade, if you can call it a parade, by saying Google will find you.
  • Google Wizard of Oz Easter Egg
When you do a search for [wizard of oz] in Google on desktop or mobile and then click on the the red shoes to make them click three times, a barrel roll happens in the search results and much more.
  • Martin Splitt Laptop Headbang
Here is a GIF I made from the latest Google webmaster hangout of Google’s Martin Splitt taking his laptop and soften doing a headbang with it. It was a question around link juice of course.

Google Ads Overview Page Filters & Bidding Maximize Conversion Value

Google Ads adds features all the time, I don’t cover them all but two ones I want to highlight are a new bidding strategy named maximize conversion value and new filter options on the overview page that both launched this week.

Filters On Overview Page

This new feature should help people do things faster because you can filter the reports right on the overview page now. You can now you can filter the Overview page by:

  • Device
  • Campaign
  • Campaign type
  • Campaign status
  • Ad group
  • Ad group status

Smart Bidding Strategy Named Maximize Conversion Value

Google launched Maximize conversion value, which is an automated bidding strategy to help you maximize the total conversion value of your campaign within your specified budget. You can use Maximize conversion value for all Search campaigns right now if you want. To get started, you’ll want to set conversion values for your conversion types or use transaction-specific values, Google said.

Search Buzz Video Recap: Google Content Indexing Bug, GoogleBot Chrome 76, Favicons, Link Penalties & More

This week I tried to zoom in on sections of the video as I was talking, so you can see the screen better – hope you like it and make sure to subscribe!. Google may have had an indexing issue again this week, but Google did not really confirm it. GoogleBot is now running Chromium version 76, including the Google testing tools. Google seems to have dropped the URLs in the snippets and replaced them all with breadcrumbs on desktop results. Google is still penalizing for unnatural links and if you get hit, it can hurt bad. Google is testing the anchor and highlight feature for featured snippets on desktop as well now. Google Search Console added AMP on Image result reporting to the performance report. Bing Webmaster Tools support Domain Connect for authentication and verification. Google said you should document if a piece of content was reviewed by a doctor. Google says dates help recognize high quality evergreen content. Google has expanded the favicon and URL above the snippet test. Google is also testing expandable people also search for, testing images in people also view and embedding suggested videos in the people also ask. Google also is testing paginated mobile results. Google showed a local knowledge panel with an ad from a competitor. Google added delivery icons to the local pack. A leaked Google document showed some interesting tidbits on Google. Google Ads is getting rid of accelerated delivery, added maximize conversion value bidding and filters on the overview page. That was this past week in search at the Search Engine Roundtable.

  • Google Still Penalizing Sites For Unnatural Links & It Can Hurt Bad
I absolutely love when the industry is transparent and Dan Petrovic from Dejan SEO said his site was slapped by an unnatural links manual action by Google and the result was that his site no longer ranks for its name or key terms. A lot of folks in the industry have been saying Google has toned down these manual actions, espesially around links but here is one example of one.
  • Google Tests Featured Snippets Anchors & Highlights On Desktop
Google has a feature on mobile, where if a featured snippet leads to an AMP page, Google can take the searcher after they click on the snippet to your AMP page, anchor them down to the section of the content the searcher wants to see and highlight that content in yellow. Well, Google is now testing that on desktop.

  • Owners Can Now Reply To Reviews On Google Maps Android
Google now lets owners and managers of verified businesses can reply to reviews directly from their Business Profile on Google Maps Android. You are able to reply to reviews many ways, including Google Maps desktop, Google My Business console and other areas but now also on Google Maps for Android.
  • Google Expands Favicon & Black Breadcrumb At Top Test
We’ve covered this user interface test numerous times but this morning, I received dozens of reports from people that they are seeing it. It is weird, I literally received over a dozen notices about this interface where Google is showing the favicon and black URL/breadcrumb at the top of the snippet in both mobile and desktop search results.
  • Google Electric Bikes
We know Google had a program for e-bikes back in 2015 but here are photos of electric bikes at the Dublin office. This version has the Google logo on it, unlike the 2015 version.
